“The tinier, the better” is what all the rave’s about these days, but for creative professionals this isn’t so.

They need power; they need more massive screen size; they need a digital companion that makes them feel safe and secure. Lenovo has these people in mind with its 17-inch ThinkPad W700 shipping September. It’s so beefed up that instead of calling it a laptop, Lenovo refers to it as a “mobile work station.”

Starting at $2,978, the W700 is built with professionals in mind: Think video editors, designers and scientists. The laptop is powered with an Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad Core processor, and it can be equipped with extra hard drives and up to 8GB of RAM. Add to that a built-in color calibrator for neurotic designers, a built-in digitizer for graph-savvy engineers and researchers, an optional Blu-ray DVD reader/burner and an optional finger-print reader and you’ll get a good idea of just how serious this machine is. The W700 would definitely be overkill if all you do with your computer is browse the internet and check e-mail (unless you have 10,000 Firefox tabs opens at a time like me).

The W700 is going to be pretty expensive, but users will likely appreciate its flexibility in terms of customization options. Compare it to Apple’s current 17-inch offering for professionals, the MacBook Pro, which starts at $2,800 and includes a DVD burner/reader, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and can only carry one hard drive. Analysts are anticipating a MacBook Pro upgrade in September, but Apple would have to make some pretty dramatic changes if it hopes to compete well with Lenovo’s 17-inch monster. Let’s get ready to rumble.
